Artist Research - The Smiths

The Smiths

The Smiths were an English band formed in Manchester in 1982, their career only lasting 5 years due to their split in 1987. Though widely recognised as an indie band, they also fit into several other sub-genres, including alternative rock, indie-pop, and jangle pop. They have influenced many bands up to this day, and are seen as one of the most important bands of the 80s, if not music history. They released four albums in their relatively short career: Their self titled debut in 1984, Meat Is Murder in 1985, The Queen Is Dead in 1986 (regarded as their best and most influential album), and Strangeways, Here We Come in 1987. Despite their huge cult following and multi-million dollar offers for a reunion, the groups main members, Morrissey and Johnny Marr, both have made it clear that there is no chance of a reunion. They are major influences on more contemporary indie bands such as Oasis and the Arctic Monkeys. Morrissey has enjoyed a successful solo career that is still  continuing, while Johnny Marr has played with many contemporary indie bands such as The Cribs and Modest Mouse.
